Welcome to this week’s blog - as always, thanks for having a read.
This week Val suggested I write about ice cream because when we joined them for The Ged Party in Stratford-upon-Avon, the weekend before last, we found a vendor selling whipped Kelly’s Cornish. Val and Mick have known singer/songwriter Ged Roberts for 35 years, so Donna and I took the opportunity to attend ‘Ged's Party’. Donna caught several trains to join me after school and we came back quickly on Monday in time for meetings. We were last in Stratford, in 2024, when the national finals of the young trader were held.. Everywhere we went that day was rammed: we also went to Clarkson’s Farm and his pub. This time in Stratford, Donna and I went on a river cruise and visited the butterfly farm and Shakespeare’s grave.
The whipped Kelly’s Cornish evoked childhood memories of family holidays on the Isle of Wight. My father recalled an ice cream vendor dispensing the same amount of whipped ice cream into every size of cone, so switched to buying small ones and initially incurred my mother’s displeasure. I love a whippy but quite often the flavour compares less favourably to a scoop. There are also regional differences: when we were in Nottingham the flavour was less rich. We particularly like the brand English Heritage have at Osborne House and Jude’s used by the National Trust. We also rate Kelly’s, New Forest Ice Cream and Marshfield Farm. This can be a problem: when we were in Lyminster on August Bank Holiday Monday we had to choose between Marshfield Farm and another brand we had yet to try, and braved it!
Last week saw several meetings, including Val and Donna having Chichester District Council’s Development, Planning and Infrastructure Panel which mainly focussed on recent changes to the National Planning Policy Framework. We hope to start alternating Travels episodes with our new project from the end of the month, which is mainly filmed in Selsey and looks at local concerns.
CDC’s Cabinet has approved the options for Selsey’s long term sea defences that will go out for public consultation in mid-October. The preferred one is a sloping revetement coupled with raising the sea wall where it is appropriate:
