April 10, 2026

Welcome to this week’s blog - as always, thanks for having a read. Donna and I also want to thank all those residents who have greeted us warmly this week as we continued campaigning for the Selsey Division of West Sussex County Council on Thursday May 7th, 2026. To vote for Donna, you must be registered by 20th April 2026. If you have not seen any of us out and about, you should this week because our number will double, including Ali in the vicinity of East Street  and Ian who will be further north. A big thank you to a few residents who are helping deliver, it's never expected, but appreciated more than we can say.

If you have been taking an interest in the local elections you may have noticed literature starting to go through doors. You may even have been ‘knocked-up' which in an electoral context means cold-called. As Independents, we have no big party machine to call upon, so we produce all our digital and paper campaign materials and deliver to residents.

Purdah has kicked in because of the campaign so there are fewer meetings. Val, Mick, Ian and Andrew had Selsey Town Council’s Planning Committee last Wednesday. Next Wednesday, Donna and Val  have Chichester District Council’s Planning Committee thegoog_1633791280n, in the evening, the whole team have the next Full Selsey Town Council Meeting.

The nominations for the West Sussex County Council elections have been published. Donna first stood for Selsey Town Council in 2015 and this will be the seventh election we have taken part in since then. In addition there have been four general elections, a European election and a by-election for Selsey Town Council we chose not to contest in the hope, if there were only one candidate, it would save taxpayers around £7000. That means, if you have lived in Selsey that long, you have had the chance to exercise your democratic right to vote on average more than once a year.

Donna has to beat candidates from four national parties, the Greens, the Liberal Democrats, the Conservatives and Reform UK. At least two of those parties have been out and about in Selsey too, so the battle for every single vote is well and truly underway. We believe, as this is a local election, the focus should be on local issues, and about protecting our community here in Selsey. Whatever the outcome, West Sussex County Council doesn't decide national policy, but we need to ensure we aren't overlooked.

Having said that, if you like to keep up with national concerns, you might be interested to learn that an AI study has revealed England's productivity divide is far more complex than a simple North-South divide:

As always, from the whole Team, stay safe.
