You may be aware that the West. Sussex County Council elections in May are now going ahead, following a U turn by the government.  Our Members have selected Donna, who is Selsey's current County Councillor, to be the Local Alliance candidate. To vote you must be registered by midnight on Monday 20 April 2026. If you are unable to register online or need additional support, contact Chichester District Council’s Elections team by calling 01243 521010 or emailing elections@chichester.gov.uk. The last day to apply for, or make a change to a postal vote is 5pm on Tuesday 21 April 2026.

Last week we mentioned that Donna and I had caught up with our two grandsons. I sometimes find it hard to believe I am a grandparent but am very glad I am. (And yes, the old saying about being able to hand them back, is true!) Appropriately, an article came my way suggesting six things grandparents do which their grandchildren appreciate. Having seen my parents and Donna’s mum years ago with our children, and more recently Mick and Val with their grandchildren, I think there is some merit in what is suggested: -

Last weekend was Valentine's Day. Donna and I had our first ‘date’ on Valentine's Day - we went out for a meal; however, you may have seen that Ali went much further:

52 years ago today, I proposed to Bob over the phone. You said yes and that was that. Mum and Dad started planning our wedding in the September.“

This year, in true Blackadder style, I hatched a cunning plan to stop Donna’s mystery man having those very fine flowers she likes so much, delivered to her. I whisked her away for the night to one of her favourite hotels on the Isle of Wight, The Brunswick in Shanklin. The trip showed what a small world we live in because Donna posted on Facebook when we stopped in Sandown and it turned out another ex Selsey couple had been there just before us.

Although it was Half Term and many officers have families, council business continued particularly the casework. On Wednesday it was Chichester District Council’s Development, Planning and Infrastructure Panel in the morning. The main item on the agenda was CDC's response to the new National Planning Policy Framework. A couple of things pertinent to Selsey and the Witterings came up: there is stronger wording clarifying that new residential development is inappropriate in areas of coastal change, and that the long term (worst case) scenario should be applied when looking at vulnerable areas.

On Wednesday evening the whole team had Full Selsey Town Council which included investment strategy, the forthcoming Annual Town Meeting and some staffing matters.

Today, Friday, Donna had Full West Sussex County Council which set their budget with a 4.99% precept increase. (WSCC accounts for around 70% of our overall Council Tax bills.)

You can watch meetings live: CDC and WSCC.

Finally:  -

As always, from the whole Team, stay safe.
