Welcome to this week’s blog - as always, thanks for having a read.
The six weeks of Summer are over, schools resume this coming week, and the long, lazy days will become an ever dimmer memory. Our area derives a large part of its income from tourism, what we may not appreciate is the positive impact of appearing in a TV programme. For instance, if like us you watch the Channel 5 remake of All Creatures Great and Small, you probably have thought about taking a trip to Yorkshire. As it turns out, our county is home to one of the most used towns by TV, as you can read here: -
Regular readers will know Donna and I have had a busy summer, but last weekend we stayed in a Riverside hotel in Worcester, home of Lea and Perrins. We visited Witley Court and Gardens which has an interesting baroque church in its grounds. We also went to Worcester Cathedral which houses the UK's largest collection of medieval manuscripts, the oldest dating back to the year 650. While we were away, Donna posted an interesting history about the origins of Bank Holidays; in 1871, Sir John Lubbock - scientist, banker, and Liberal politician - introduced the Bank Holidays Act, giving workers official days off. People loved it so much that early bank holidays were even nicknamed 'St. Lubbock’s Days.' If you enjoyed the long weekend, raise a belated glass at some point to the man who believed rest and leisure were important and those who were unable to enjoy it: carers, emergency and NHS workers, and the many hospitality and retail staff who continue whatever.
This week we focused on casework, but I did pop into Selsey Town Hall to check if our two members of staff, not away, were managing with the others on holiday. Meanwhile Mick and Val have been back in the lighting shed continuing work on Selsey's Christmas illuminations which will be back in use before we know it. As shops are already stocking Christmas items there is no harm in suggesting you pencil Saturday November 29th, 2025 in your diaries for festive events in Selsey.
On Tuesday it is the official opening of the refurbished Manor Park in Selsey from 10:15 to 12:30. The speeches, etc, are at 10:30; V2 Radio is coming along and Officers will be giving free raffle tickets to children so they can get an ice cream. Let’s hope the rain holds off. I won’t be there because I am back to school on Monday for arguably the key INSET day of the academic year before cutting back to just Tuesdays to Fridays.
On Wednesday, it's Selsey Town Council's Planning Committee. On Thursday, it's Ian and my fortnightly catch up with Selsey Town Council's Senior Team. There are also County and District briefings on where we are with local government reform.
You can watch meetings live: CDC and WSCC.
Looking ahead, on September 21st the Vegan market returns to the City Centre around the Cross between 10am and 4pm.
Finally: -
As always, from the whole Team, stay safe.
Tim
