August 8, 2025

Welcome to this week’s blog - as always, thanks for having a read. Our thoughts are particularly with A Level students who get their results on Thursday (August 14th) - we hope you get the grades you want for your next step in life, but if not, there's always another route!

Don't forget the RNLI's Selsey Lifeboat Week is nearly over and it culminates with Selsey Lifeboat Day on Sunday (August 10th.)

This week Mick and Val returned to the lighting shed, now electrical supplies have arrived. In four hours they managed ten Christmas trees, but obviously there is still a lot to do. For newer readers, they start work on mending and replacing parts of Selsey’s Christmas lights in February. The lights suffer from coastal winds, etc whilst they are up and take months to prepare for the next festive season.

On Wednesday, Donna and Val had Chichester District Council's Planning Committee while Ali, Ian, and I had our fortnightly catch-up with Selsey Town Council’s Senior Team. CDC's Planning Committee considered applications from Tuppenny Barn in Emsworth, Chichester Enterprise Centre and from a farm in Northchapel. At our fortnightly catch-up, the items we discussed included the progression of the Warners Yard toilets, Remembrance Sunday, Selsey’s Christmas lights and progress with several other issues.

You can watch meetings live: CDC and WSCC.

I thought you might find this an interesting read: how our District compares with the other six districts & boroughs in West Sussex for the proportion of recycling that is rejected: -

If you picnic in the coming weeks and want to keep your waste low, here are some tips from West Sussex County Council: -

  1. Don’t forget to take your reusable water bottle. Reusable bottles are a great way to reduce your waste whilst staying hydrated.
  2. Reusable cutlery is another great way to reduce your waste. Instead of packing disposable knives and forks, take the real thing and bring them home at the end of the picnic for washing up.
  3. You could also try to avoid packing home-made food in cling film or tin foil and use reusable containers instead. There are many great options available to keep food fresh such as beeswax wraps and Tupperware.

Make sure to only take what you need and avoid packing extra food. Plan realistically and don’t be afraid to split food. For example, if you've bought a whole tub of hummus and you know you are likely to only eat half, put half in a reusable container and leave the other half at home in the fridge to eat later.

You can also find their waste prevention stand at events in our District: -
