Welcome to this week’s blog - as always, thanks for having a read. Thank you too, if you took part in Selsey’s VE80 event yesterday, Thursday May 8, and said hello to any one of us: I particularly want to thank Maria from Asda who was working until 11pm and was sad she would miss it but wanted me to pass on her good wishes. Hopefully she saw the TV or V2 Radio coverage. We were touched by all your appreciation of the work Selsey Town Council put into organising the event, particularly the two senior Officers we thanked last week, Jenny Ririe the Deputy Clerk and Zoe Neal, the Development, Engagement and Communications Manager. I caught up with Zoe on Tuesday for a final technical run through. Zoe wrote a series of articles that appeared in the press to recognise the day: -.
On Wednesday, Donna had Chichester District Council’s Planning Committee. Next week includes Full Selsey Town Council on Wednesday and Full West Sussex County Council on Friday (for Donna.) You can watch council meetings live: CDC and WSCC.
In the last week, two people you may have come across on social media have marked significant anniversaries: Gareth was elected by Selsey North to Selsey Town Council a year ago, with the count taking place, appropriately as he likes Star Wars, on Saturday May 4, 2024; meanwhile Donna was first elected by Selsey South ten years ago with the count taking place on Friday May 8, 2015. Congratulations to them both.
This coming Monday, May 12, is International Nurses Day. You may not read this until after the day itself, but you can still learn more about it: -

Chichester Roman Week returns with during half term, May 26 - 31. The event invites families, history lovers and curious minds to step back in time and explore Chichester’s rich Roman heritage through a packed programme led by The Novium Museum. The highlight of the week is the live Roman re-enactment in Priory Park on Thursday 29 May. Roman-themed events will also be hosted by partner venues across the district, including Fishbourne Roman Palace, Chichester Festival Theatre, Pallant House Gallery, Chichester Harbour Conservancy, and Butser Ancient Farm.
In 1924, Queen Mary visited the Shippam’s factory in Chichester and left with an unusual royal gift — one of a series of miniature jars of Anchovy Paste, specially made for display in her famous dolls house. Over a century later, The Novium Museum is on the hunt to track one down ahead of a major new exhibition, ‘Hurrah for Shippam’s!’, opening on Saturday 12 July 2025. It will explore the fascinating story behind the company — from inventive advertising and quirky packaging to the local people who made it all happen. The miniature jar, presented to Queen Mary during her visit to the East Walls factory, is now a rare collector’s item. It’s believed that several of these jars were sold locally at auction last year, and The Novium Museum is appealing to the public to help locate one that could be borrowed for display in the exhibition.
Finally: -
As always, from the whole Team, stay safe.
