Welcome to this week’s blog - as always, thanks for having a read.
On Wednesday the whole team had the annual Full Selsey Town Council which included the election of Committees, etc for the next year. Donna spoke at CDC Cabinet on Tuesday regarding changes to the Planning Committee and on Thursday several of us were at Chichester District Council for an evening reception. Next week’s main meeting is Full Chichester District Council for Val, Steve and our Green colleagues Sarah Sharp and Tim Young. Donna and I won’t be there because we are attending a garden party at Buckingham Palace. To her surprise, Donna's invitation came via West Sussex County Council - I am her plus one. Whilst you have to be cautious with photos, we will try and post something out. You can watch council meetings live: CDC and WSCC.
Vintage motorcycle riders from across West Sussex will gather in Chichester city centre at the finish of an annual charity ride on Sunday 18 May. The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is an annual global charity event that celebrates vintage and classic motorcycles and their dapper dressed motorcycle riders, in support of Movember, one of the leading men’s health charities. The ride in West Sussex, starts in Shoreham and finishes in Chichester: in the past two years it has raised over £17,000 for the charity.
Chichester District Council is supporting the event by organising a dapper and classic themed market in the city centre (North and East Street) from 10am, The riders arrive along North Street at around 12.45pm and park in West and South Street until 3.30pm.
Chichester Roman Week returns May 26 - 31. The live re-enactment in Priory Park is on Thursday 29 May and there will be themed events across the district.
The Novium Museum has been awarded a grant of £117,266 from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to celebrate women’s history in our district: a psychoanalyst who fled Nazi Germany, a suffragist fighting for women rights and an award-winning author will be just a few of the fascinating individuals included in a major women’s history exhibition being planned as a result.
‘ChichestHER: Their Story, Our Inspiration’ is a key two-year project that will shine a light on the lives, work, and achievements of women, past and present. It will include a headline exhibition, a new interactive website, and a series of community-led initiatives. It will celebrate local female pioneers and begin to redress the historical imbalance that has so often seen women’s contributions overlooked or underrepresented in local heritage, providing a platform for the voices and experiences of local women.
We mentioned last week that in 1924 Queen Mary visited the Shippam’s factory in Chichester and left with one of a series of miniature jars of Anchovy Paste, specially made for display in her famous dolls house. The Novium Museum is trying to track one down ahead of a major new exhibition, ‘Hurrah for Shippam’s!’, opening on Saturday 12 July 2025. The miniature jar, presented to Queen Mary during her visit to the East Walls factory, is now a rare collector’s item. It’s believed that several of these jars were sold locally at auction last year,
We are what we eat. Some of the food we consider ‘bad’ can be good for us as you can read here:

As always, from the whole Team, stay safe.
