I was back at school today, which means that sadly, Summer is pretty much over once more. The weather was a disappointment at times, but we hope you managed some quality time and did something memorable. As usual at this time, there is speculation about whether we might get an Indian Summer and, if so, for how long. The old saying as always holds true, namely the future is the undiscovered country. The clocks have not changed yet so this is still a good time to get out and about. Yesterday was actually National Beach Day, so should you fancy a walk on a different beach, or enjoy popping over to the Isle of Wight like Donna and I, this is for you. Our local beaches are great too, if you don’t fully agree, this article includes a map which shows those in Sussex with the best and worst water quality - guess where you can find more than one judged "Excellent".
One of the Peninsula's most famous residents, Sir Patrick Moore, moved to Selsey to avoid light pollution. In September 15th from 10pm, is Earth Night 2023, when we are urged to reduce or turn off outdoor lights for an entire night. Please do your bit.
On Wednesday the team had Planning at STC, while on Thursday Mick & Val were testing and repairing Selsey's Christmas lights, something that will be a weekly commitment now until they go up because a substantial number need repairing each year. For Donna and I the ward work has continued; meanwhile, this coming week, the meetings are back with a vengeance: Donna and Val are attending CDC’s Cabinet on Tuesday because the wooden ramp at Selsey's East Beach is being discussed, and Donna (with our Green colleague Sarah) also has their Economic Development Panel and, on Wednesday, CDC’s Planning. This was going to include an item I red-carded on the grounds of public interest - Steve was reading my comments as I will be at work, and speaking too; however, yesterday we learnt it has been deferred for now.
On Wednesday evening there is a Selsey Town Council Finance and Administration Panel for some of us followed by a further Business Plan meeting for us all.
I have had confirmation that the potential removal of seven redundant mooring rings on Selsey’s seawall, that many of you consider part of our fishing heritage, will be on the agenda for the next Full STC, which is on the 13th. When residents raised concerns with us, I asked CDC if STC could be consulted. The meeting starts at 7.30pm and everyone is welcome; however, if you wish to speak I would advise registering your interest to do so as soon as possible.
Related to this, this is CDC’s information on coastal recreation and byelaws.
A couple of things from last week worth repeating: -
WSCC is urging organisations including clubs and local community groups to apply for funding that could help increase the number of potentially life-saving defibrillators across the county, from the Department of Health and Social Care’s £1million Community Automated External Defibrillators Fund.
WSCC also has an opportunity for tourism or hospitality businesses to take part in a free al fresco dining, networking event and gain practical advice to help propel their business forward, on September 27.
There is a 5-day road closure of the B2145 in Hunston from September 11, between 09:30 and 15:00. An alternative route will be signed.
PS Waverley, the last seagoing paddle steamer is sailing past the BIll on September 13 - this article includes a map of the route.
From Saturday 7 October, one of the UK’s finest collections of Star Wars toys and original cinema posters is going on display in The Novium Museum, May The Toys Be With You.
In recent posts, we have been sharing some interesting reads around gut health. This week you may want to read more about the connection between autism and the microbiome becoming clearer than ever, and how beer could exert greater effects than probiotics.
VAAC have a disabled person's day on September 13. They are striving to improve access, services and opportunities for disabled people in our District so, if you are able, please join them.
WSCC’s Prevention Assessment Team (PAT) includes NHS nurses. The team helps older residents across the county access the support they need to live independently at home and as part of their community. This important work is achieved through strong partnerships and the skills and knowledge of social care workers, support workers and nurses. In the last four months, these nurses have attended 35 health promotion events throughout the county taking 225 people’s blood pressure. From this, they were able to identify:
eight urgent, same day G.P. referrals,
a further 50 people referred for G.P. monitoring, with 21 of those individuals having an irregular pulse, which can sometimes be serious or potentially life-threatening if left untreated.
Between April and June, their nurses also completed 165 assessments in their NHS health check clinics which are devised to help people understand the things that increase their risk of developing cardiovascular related diseases, and the steps that can be taken to improve their health. To find dates and venues of where the PAT nurses will be, you can follow their Twitter or Facebook pages.
Finally: -
As always, from the whole Team, stay safe.
Tim
